You would’ve thought the end was truly near if you were anywhere near the Tuscaloosa area on January 28th of 2014. Cars were sliding all over the roads; schools canceled all activities; people went home early from work, and college kids were having snowball fights like they were youngsters again. Being from Florida, I don’t get to experience snow as often as most people. No kidding, it literally snows maybe once every five years in my hometown, so I had to take advantage of this unfamiliar condensation falling from the skies.
I enjoyed being involved in the snowball fights we had in front of the fraternity house I currently reside in. I mean not a whole lot goes on when living in a fraternity house, so it was fun to finally have some good ole fashion recess in the front yard. Okay so obviously I’m being sarcastic when I say “nothing goes on”, but seriously, I had a blast doing something that didn’t involve a bunch of my fraternity brothers destroying my humble abode with their shenanigans.
Also, I was able to introduce my 10 month old puppy to snow on that day, so that was a treat of its own. I have a English Setter/German Shorthair Pointer mix and her name is Melleaux (pronounced “Mellow”). Well I believe I jinxed myself by naming her Melleaux because she is far from that, but watching her go wild in the snow gave me great satisfaction. She’s pretty well trained considering she’s lived in a fraternity house her whole life, but luckily, next year I’m moving to a house with a back yard for her to play in. Seeing her run around in circles with the snow covering her coat was a humorous adventure, which was surprising because I figured she was going to be too scared to play in it. However, it was if snow was the greatest thing invented since tennis balls for Melleaux. She’s an overall lovable happy dog, but on the day that Tuscaloosa received the most snow of the year, she was the happiest I’ve ever seen her.
The snow day caused a lot of ruckus in other parts of the southeast, and even in Tuscaloosa, but for me the snow day was more fun than I had all year. Sure it was frigid cold, which is not something most Floridians ever experience, but being with all of my close friends and my dog was a great way to slow down for a day or two. We all tend to live life in the fast lane and a lot of us go through the same routine day after day, but every now and then it’s relaxing to take a day off from life. Every one should have the opportunity to have a snow day every once in awhile.
